From Album : Irresistible (1968)

Thomasina Winifred Montgomery, known as Tammi Terrell (April 29, 1945 -- March 16, 1970) was an American singer-songwriter most notable for her association with Motown and her duets with Marvin Gaye. As a teenager she recorded for the Scepter--Wand, Try Me and Checker record labels. She signed with Motown in April 1965 and enjoyed modest success as a solo singer. Once she was paired with Gaye in 1967, her stardom grew, but on October 14 of that year she collapsed on stage into Gaye's arms during a performance. She was soon thereafter diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor which eventually led to her death six weeks before her 25th birthday.

Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby
Ain't nothing like the real thing
Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby
Ain't nothing like the real thing

I got your picture hangin' on the wall
It can't see or come to me when I call your name
I realize it's just a picture in a frame

I read your letters when you're not near
But they don't move me
And they don't groove me like when I hear
Your sweet voice whispering in my ear

Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby
Ain't nothing like the real thing

I play the game, a fantasy
I pretend I'm not in reality
I need the shelter of your arms to comfort me

No other sound is quite the same as your name
No touch can do half as much to make me feel better
So let's stay together

I got some memories to look back on
And though they help me when you phone
I'm well aware nothing can take the place of being there

So let me get the real thing
So let me get the real thing
Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby
Ain't nothing like the real thing
Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby
Ain't nothing like the real thing

I DO NOT OWN THIS SONG JUST A FAN

Motown's most unbeatable twosome...

This is a track from the album, "Easy," the third and last of the great Marvin and Tammi albums. (more) The album came near the end of Tammi Terrell's life and that may be why I always find the album a bit difficult to listen to.

Hearing Marvin and Tammi cover the Purify Brothers' hit, I can't help but always feel a little sad. There is something subtly mournful in the arrangement and performance here. Oh, The Funk Brothers are definitely cooking on this- check out the drums- but still, the track sounds tinted with a melancholy feeling of sorts.

Perhaps knowing of the very brave and tenacious fight Tammi put up to continue to record and knowing she died too soon is coloring my hearing of the track. Perhaps knowing how Marvin took Tammi's death so supremely hard is filtering my hearing as well...

All in all, no matter how I hear it, it's a beautifully done testament to the picture of Tammi and Marvin as friends who genuinely loved working together and would be linked forever.

The Billie Holiday Experience presents: Tammi Terrell Live at the Roostertail. A very rare, live recorded performance by the late Tammi Terrell at the Roostertail most likely in 1967 (she tells MC Scott Regan that she's 21, and she died when she was 24 in 1970.)

Here, she sings:
"Almost Like Being In Love" 0:00
"I Can't Believe You Love Me" 2:31
Medley: "What A Difference a Day Made" / "Running Out of Fools" / "Tell Me the Truth" / "Baby Love" 5:35
"Come On and See Me" 9:50

Enjoy! Like and comment!

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - California Soul

Great tune by Marvin Gaye and (maybe) Tammi Terrell. Their version was recorded in 1967 during Terrells physical decline (she was suffering from a brain tumor) and released after her death, on their last duet LP Easy.
The rumor has always been (thanks to claims by Gaye himself) that the vocals on this tune (and many tunes recorded during this period) were not in fact Terrell, but actually Valerie Simpson (something that Simpson herself has denied).
