Satie composa durant l'été 1920 trois danses et une "Grande Ritournelle" pour l'exotique Caryathis (Mme Élise Jouhandeau) pour deux pianos, qu'il orchestra ensuite pour leur première publique le 14 juin 1921. Il exécuta également cette version pour piano solo des danses 1 et 2, y incorporant quelques changements de dynamique et de phrasé intéressants, ainsi qu'il le faisait souvent.

Satie composed three dances and a "Grand Ritornello" for the exotic Caryathis (Mme Élise Jouhandeau) over the summer of 1920 as piano duets, which he orchestrated for their public premiere on 14 June 1921. He also made these piano solo versions of dances 1 and 2, incorporating some interesting changes of dynamics and phrasing as he did so.

Erik Satie ~1889~ Chanson Hongroise (World Premiere Recording by Alessandro Simonetto)

These four measures of a Hungarian song were written by Satie on the back of the Fifth Gnossienne manuscript (1889), which is actually the first gnossienne he composed. This melody was probably gleaned at the Paris Exposition Universelle, the same year, and we can already hear there what will make the first three Gnossiennes famous.

This recording by Alessandro Simonetto is a world premiere, from his 3-CD Satie album "Early and Esoteric Works", released in 2016 by the OnClassical label (http://onclassical.com/).

Ces quatre mesures d'une chanson hongroise ont été écrites par Satie au dos du manuscrit de la Cinquième Gnossienne (1889), qui est en réalité la première gnossienne qu'il a composée. Cette mélodie a probablement été glanée à l'Exposition Universelle de Paris, la même année, et on y trouve déjà ce qui fera la renommée des trois premières Gnossiennes.

Satie a modelé sa "Sonatine" sur l'idée d'une journée de la vie d'un bureaucrate, à partir de la Sonatine en Do Op.36 n°1 de Clementi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Ksi2qmW0A). Il revient ici aux barres de mesure, silences et autres armatures (après les avoir utilisés occasionnellement dans les "Enfantines").

Satie est ici au plus près du pastiche, de même qu'il présente ici un exemple précoce du néoclassicisme excentrique que Stravinsky et le Groupe des Six vont bientôt adopter.

L'indication "Vivache" du finale est un gag typique de Satie. La présence en quartes et quintes parallèles (mesures 33-36, 98-99 du Finale) va augmenter de manière significative dans les dernières œuvres de Satie.

Satie closely modelled his "Sonatine" about a day in the life of a bureaucrat, on Clementi's Sonatina in C Op.36 no 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Ksi2qmW0A). Here Satie returns to barlines, rests and key signatures for good (after their occasional use in works like the "Enfantines").

It was the nearest Satoe came to pastiche, as well as an early example of quirky neo-classicism, which Stravinsky and the composers of "Les Six" soon adopted.

The marking "Vivache" (sic) for the Finale is a typical Satie joke. The passages in parallel fourths and fifths (like bars 33-36, 98-99 for the Finale) feature increasingly in Satie's later works.

Composés entre août et décembre 1919, ils furent d'abord un groupe de trois nocturnes en Ré majeur, le premier d'abord titré "Faux-nocturne" associé à une histoire de fantômes qui troublent le tranquille paysage nocturne. Satie, prenant en toute conscience un nouveau départ après la mort de Debussy, retira le commentaire avant publication. Mais il ajouta les indications métronomiques.

Alors qu'il finissait d'écrire le n°3, il dit à Valentine Hugo (née Gross) que "le premier sert de prélude ; le deuxième, plus court, est très tendre — très nocturne ; le troisième... est un nocturne dramatique, plus rapide. Ils forment à eux trois un tout dont je suis très content".

Les nocturnes 4 et 5 contrastent par leur tonalité avec le calme et puissant n°6 revenant (au dernier moment) au Ré majeur des numéros 1 à 3.

Le n°4 est sans doute l'une des plus belles pièces de Satie, flottante et détachée, avec une ambiguïté intrigante entre le Si et le Fa# mineur et sa troublante section médiane.

Composed between August and December 1919, these began as a set of three nocturnes in D major, with no.1 originally titled "Faux-nocturne" and still carrying a story about an "old Will-o'-the-wisp" who troubles the tranquil nocturnal landscape. Satie, consciously making a new, serious start after Debussy's death, withdrew the commentary before publication. But he did add the metronome markings.

As he finished no.3 he told Valentine Hugo (née Gross) that "the first serves as a prelude; the second is shorter and very tender – very nocturnal ; the third... is more rapid and dramatic nocturne. They form a whole with which I am very pleased".

Nocturnes 4 and 5 are in contrasting keys, with the alternatively calm and powerful no.6 returning (at the last moment) to D major of nos.1-3.

No.4 has to be one of Satie's most beautiful pieces, floating and detached, with its intriguing ambiguity between B and F# minor and its disturbing short middle section.
