Performed by Kathryn Stott and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Michael Nyman.

The Piano Concerto is a piano concerto based on the music Nyman wrote for The Piano organized into four phases (one movement). The saxophone is omitted ("Here to There" is given to the piano soloist) and the piano is accompanied by a traditional orchestra. The work is Nyman's second concerto, having previously written a saxophone concerto, Where the Bee Dances, for John Harle.
The Piano Concerto was first premiered 26 September 1993 at the Festival de Lille, which was also the debut of MGV. In his liner notes. Nyman cites the definite article as significant, and states the order of composition of the work: Autumn 1991, piano music for Holly Hunter to play in the film; Summer 1992, orchestral score for the completed film; concerto commissioned by Festival de Lille in Spring 1993. Jean-Claude Casadesus conducted the premiere of both works. Stott was the premiere soloist.

The beautiful music from Patrick Hawes' Blue in Blue album. For some reason it has always made me think of deep blue wateriness hence the choice in images. I'm not great at making videos really, I just wanted this beautiful piece of music here so I can share with people one of my favourite things to listen to.

Photos I have taken from the internet.

Camille Saint-Saëns: Piano concerto No. 1 in D Major, Op. 17, Gabriel Tacchino (piano), Orchestra of Radio Luxembourg, Louis de Froment (conductor)

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 – 16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era.

It is a little known fact that Saint-Saens was a child prodigy, a talent that rivaled that of Mozart. He started to play the piano aged two and a half, wrote his first piece aged three, and gave his first concert (which included the Beethoven third piano concerto) at age ten.

In 1848, at the age of thirteen, Saint-Saëns was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire. In 1851 Saint-Saëns won the Conservatoire's top prize for organists, and in the same year he began formal composition studies.

After studying at the Conservatoire Saint-Saëns followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in France, mainland Europe, Britain, and the Americas.

Saint-Saëns held only one teaching post, at the École de Musique Classique et Religieuse in Paris, and remained there for less than five years. It was nevertheless important in the development of French music: his students included Gabriel Fauré, among whose own later pupils was Maurice Ravel. Both of them were strongly influenced by Saint-Saëns, whom they revered as a genius.

Saint-Saëns was the first major French composer to write piano concertos. The five piano concertos span most of his composing life. It is a pity that while the second is occassionally heard, the rest have largely fallen from the front-line repertoire. There is much joy, melodic inventiveness and a subtle depth to these works that is a refreshing relief for modern times.

Ladies Only
The songs collected for this recital ‘Ladies only’ mark Schubert’s strong empathy for women in poetry. Since uncertainty and emotional fluctuations were seen as particular female qualities, it is not surprising that poets in the Biedermeier era (1815-1848) used female personae to express their feelings of distress.
Nienke Oostenrijk has done excellent research into the meaning of these songs and therefore she has also contacted the famous English philosopher Roger Scruton, who wrote the essay " Schubert is needed now more than ever" . She paints an accurate picture of how feminine feelings have played a role in Schubert's life. In the performance by Nienke Oostenrijk and Marianne Boer you can hear how they interpret these songs with great understanding of text and context. This creates a beautiful combination of depth and naturalness, in which the interaction is truly sublime.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Work: Festival Overture on the Danish National Anthem, Op.15 (1866)

Orchestra: London Symphony Orchestra

Conductor: Geoffrey Simon

During his time at the Moscow Conservatoire, around September 1866 the school's principal, Nikolay Rubinstein commissioned Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to compose a Festival Overture on the Danish National Anthem to be played for the visit of the Tsarevich (heir to the throne) to Moscow, accompanied by his new Danish bride, Princess Dagmar of Denmark. The Tsarrevich would eventually be crowned Tsar Alexander III of Russia and remain a devoted follower of Tchaikovsky's music, awarding the composer both the Order of St. Vladimir (Fourth Class) in 1884 and a state pension in 1885.

Tchaikovsky often set about functional commissions with a strong air of professionalism, knowing full well that the piece may only even be played once, and this work was no exception. Indeed Tchaikovsky himself wrote at the end of his life that this piece was 'very effective... and far better as music than 1812'.

Tchaikovsky thought it would be a good idea to incorporate the Russian national anthem's melody into the work as well, by way of symbolising the union of two realms, but this innocent venture ultimately led to the piece's downfall and to the cancellation of the official performance.

A piece of surviving journalism states, 'Our talented young composer for some reason took it into his head to set forth our Russian national anthem in the minor key, which completely transforms the character of this well-known melody.'

That said, Tchaikovsky received a gift of gold cuff links from the Tsarevich as an expression of royal gratitude for his efforts anyway.

Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 -- October 14, 1990) was an American conductor, composer, author, music lecturer and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the United States of America to receive worldwide acclaim. According to The New York Times, he was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history."

As a composer he was prolific, writing symphonies, ballet music, operas, chamber music, pieces for the piano, other orchestral and choral works, and other concert and incidental music, but the tremendous success of "West Side Story" remained unequaled by his other compositions.

Claude Debussy - Clair de Lune Played on Old Upright Piano

Claude Debussy - Clair de Lune, played on an old classic upright piano by Luciano Piano.

Instead of playing Clair de Lune on a concerto grand piano, this time I made a recording a few weeks ago of Claude Debussy's most famous work on a 70-year old classic upright piano in my recording studio here in beautiful Italy. Claire de Lune, from Suite Bergamasque, is one of my favourite works from the Romantic period, as it can be played in many ways without the composition losing its meaning. This time I played the song a little softer and in a bit lower tempo. The classic upright piano I own is one of my favourite pianos, I think it has a nice balanced tone, a wide dynamic range, and a beautiful but delicate sound, especially when I don't open the piano's lid all the way. Several microphones were used to capture the sound of the piano up close, and several microphones to capture the ambience of my recording studio.

What movies have used "Claire de Lune" in the soundtrack?

In case you were wondering in what movies Claire de Lune was featured, my wife and I saw “Twilight” the other day, and this movie also uses Debussy’s famous work in a scene. Coincidentally, my wife and I were watching “Ocean’s Thirteen” a few years ago, and once again we heard “Clair de Lune”! The moment I pointed this out to my wife, I joked that the song seems to be featured in almost every Hollywood blockbuster movie these days. If you want to see yourself what movies used "Claire de Lune" in the score, you can do a search in the IMDB movie database; you will get a list of more than 50 movies and television series that have “Clair de Lune” on the soundtrack. It wouldn't surprise me if it's even more.

I hope you like and subscribe to my Piano Music Channel!

Luciano.

Gabriel Fauré - Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 15

Trio Wanderer:
Antoine Tamestit, viola
Raphaël Pidoux, violoncello
Vincent Coq, piano
Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian, violin

1. Allegro molto moderato
2. Scherzo. Allegro vivo
3. Adagio
4. Finale. Allegro molto

Gabriel Fauré's Piano Quartet No. 1, in C minor, Op. 15 is one of two chamber works written by him for the conventional piano quartet combination of piano, violin, viola and cello. Despite being in a minor key it is predominantly positive in tone, though with some hints in the slow movement of the emotional turmoil of Fauré's life at the time of the composition.

In 1877, after wooing her for five years, Fauré had finally become engaged to Marieanne Viardot, daughter of the well-known singer Pauline Viardot. The engagement lasted for less than four months, and Marieanne broke it off, to Fauré's considerable distress. It was in the later stages of their relationship that he began work on the quartet, in the summer of 1876. He completed it in 1879, and revised it in 1883, completely rewriting the finale. The first performance of the original version was given on 14 February 1880. In a study dated 2008, Kathryn Koscho notes that the original finale has not survived, and is believed to have been destroyed by Fauré in his last days
